The above prices & generator
sizing table is for budget purposes only. This chart assumes providing
power for the whole house. This scenario is assuming a 200-400 Amp
service that the generator will be capable of running on a daily basis,
it does not mean running everything in your home at the same time.
Generators that are sized to pick-up partial loads (specific loads –breakers)
are also available. However, due to the increased electrical work involved
in sectioning these loads into a separate breaker panel can mean the price
for a smaller generator (less amperage available) = less amenities run, and
the additional electrical work can result in a comparable price installation
with less power capabilities.
Example:
A 100 kw generator @ single phase 120/240 voltage is capable of producing
333Amps, more than enough to power a whole house 400 Amp service. Multiple
A/C’s, lights, stove, microwave, outlets, lights, washer-dryer, dishwasher, stereo-computers…etc.
A 50 kw generator with a separated 200Amp emergency panel at the same voltage is capable of producing 225 Amps. Depending which breakers (loads) you choose it will only be possible to pick up (1) A/C and various selected loads.
The savings in generator size difference many times is negated by the extra electrical work required to separate the breakers (loads) to another panel and gives you only half of the electrical power |
